How do I get the musty mildew smell out of clothes stored in a humid closet?

Your clothes are clean. They still smell like a crawlspace. That's mildew, and in the Lowcountry it has almost nothing to do with how well you washed them.

Mildew odor comes from mold spores feeding on moisture, body oils, and starch. Our summer dew points sit in the 70s for months. A closed closet on an exterior wall stays humid even with the AC running, and cotton and linen hold that moisture like a sponge. Give it 6 weeks and the smell sets in.

Here's what actually gets it out.

Wash in the hottest water the fabric can take

Check the care label first. Sturdy cotton, denim, and towels can handle hot. Linen, silk, wool, and anything with a lining cannot.

Water temperature does most of the work here. Cold water moves the spores around without killing much.

Add oxygen bleach, not chlorine bleach

Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate, sold as OxiClean or similar) kills mildew and is safe on colors and most fabrics. Dissolve it in warm water first, then add it to the machine.

Chlorine bleach will weaken linen fibers, yellow silk, and destroy wool. Skip it.

Soak, don't just cycle

For anything that's been sitting all summer, run a soak before the wash. Fill a tub or a bucket with warm water and a scoop of oxygen bleach, submerge the garment fully, and leave it 4 to 8 hours. Then wash normally.

One wash cycle is 40 minutes of contact time. A soak is 8 hours. That difference is why the first wash usually fails.

Dry it in the sun if you can

Sunlight is a mildew killer. Hang the item outside for a few hours after washing, in direct sun if the fabric can take it (whites, cotton, denim). Keep dark colors and silk in the shade so they don't fade.

Smell it before it goes in the dryer. Heat sets mildew odor permanently. If it still smells damp and earthy, soak it again.

What we can't save

Being honest about this. If the mildew has been there long enough to leave black or grey speckling on cotton, the spores have eaten into the fiber and the stain is structural. We can usually pull the smell out. The spots are permanent.

How to keep it from happening again

Five things, in order of how much they matter:

1. Never store anything unwashed. Invisible sweat and body oils are what the mold eats. A shirt you wore once in July and hung back up is the whole problem.
2. Get rid of the plastic dry cleaning bags. They're for transport, not storage. Plastic traps humidity against the fabric. Use breathable cotton or canvas garment bags.
3. Lose the cardboard boxes. Cardboard absorbs moisture and holds it against your clothes. Use plastic bins with lids for long-term storage, and toss a few silica gel packs in.
4. Leave the closet door open a few hours a week, or run a small dehumidifier if the closet is on an exterior wall. Air movement is free.
5. Don't pack the rod tight. Clothes need air between them. If you can't slide a hanger easily, it's too full.

Does vinegar remove mildew smell from clothes? It helps on light, fresh odor. Add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. On anything that's been sitting for months, vinegar alone won't do it. Use oxygen bleach and a long soak.

Why do my clothes smell musty right out of the washer? Usually the machine, not the clothes. Front loaders trap water in the door gasket and detergent drawer. Wipe the gasket dry, leave the door open between loads, and run a hot empty cycle with oxygen bleach once a month.
