How do you get yellow underarm stains out of white linen and cotton shirts?

The yellow isn't sweat. It's the aluminum in your antiperspirant bonding with body oils and salt, then baking into the fiber every time the shirt goes through a hot dryer.

That matters because it changes the fix. Sweat is a protein stain. Antiperspirant residue is a mineral and oil stain. Treat it like sweat and you'll spend an afternoon getting nowhere.

Linen and light cotton get hit hardest here, which is unlucky, because that's most of what people wear in Charleston from April through October.

Three things that set the stain permanently

Do these and the shirt is done. No cleaner can reverse them.

1. Chlorine bleach. It reacts with the aluminum and turns the yellow a deeper brown. It also eats linen fibers. This is the single most common way people ruin a white linen shirt.
2. The hot dryer. Heat polymerizes the oil into the fabric. If a stain is still visible when the wash finishes, do not put it in the dryer.
3. Ironing over it. Same problem as the dryer, with more concentrated heat.

The soak that actually works

This takes overnight and about 4 minutes of effort.

1. Turn the shirt inside out so you're working the stain from the back.
2. Make a paste: 1 part oxygen bleach powder, 1 part baking soda, enough warm water to get a thick paste. Work it into the stain with your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
3. Let the paste sit 30 minutes.
4. Fill a basin with warm water and a full scoop of oxygen bleach. Submerge the whole shirt and leave it 6 to 8 hours.
5. Wash on the warmest setting the label allows, with your normal detergent. Skip the fabric softener.
6. Air dry. Check the underarms in good light before it goes anywhere near heat.

Most fresh stains come out in one pass. Older ones take 2 or 3 rounds, and they lighten each time.

For set-in stains on cotton

If the shirt is 100% cotton and white with no trim, you can go harder. Make a paste of oxygen bleach and a small amount of dish soap, work it in, then set the shirt in direct sun while the paste is still wet. Sunlight plus oxygen bleach breaks down the oil.

Don't do this on linen, silk, wool, or anything with buttons or trim that might discolor.

What to change so it stops happening

• Let antiperspirant dry fully before you put a shirt on. Most of the transfer happens when it's still wet.
• Switch to an aluminum-free deodorant for shirts you care about. You'll sweat more and stain less.
• Wash light shirts after every wear in summer. Body oils oxidize on the hanger and yellow over a few weeks even without visible sweat.
• Wear a thin undershirt under linen. Unglamorous, and it works.

When to bring it to us

Bring it in if the shirt is dry clean only, has a lining, is silk or a silk blend, or if you've already tried the soak twice and it's still there.

Tell us where the stain is and what it is. A shirt handed over with "yellow underarms, antiperspirant" gets pre-treated at the spotting board before it goes into the machine. A shirt handed over with no notes gets cleaned, and the stain often survives the cycle.
